Other Elder Scrolls Games

What better way to pass the time until Oblivion's release than to (re)play all of the other great games of the series?

The Elder Scrolls I: Arena
line

arena screenshot The game that started the series, this is still my first one true love when it comes to CRPGs. You get to explore all of Tamriel - all nine provinces - in this game from 1993. More screenshots can be found over at Mobygames.

As an Elder Scrolls anniversary gift, Bethesda has released the game for free download! You can get it here. You will need either a computer with DOS on it or a program like DosBox. This requires a pretty fast computer though, as this program will emulate an old MS-Dos computer.

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
line

daggerfall screenshot The second game in the series, Daggerfall introduced a lot of new concepts to the series: the dialog system got an overhaul, skills were introduced and factions made their first appearance. Many hardcore TES fans still consider it the best of the lot. Unfortunally, it is rather difficult to come by these days: Try your luck on auction sites, there might still be a few copies in the wild. More screenshots can be found at Mobygames.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
line

morrowind screenshot The third and most current game in the series was released in 2002 and was the first real smash hit of the series - over one million copies were sold for the X-Box console alone. The world of Morrowind is smaller, but much more detailed than that of the predecessors. The dialog system got a major overhaul, the graphics are a whole different league and the quests and dungeons are no longer autogenerated. To me though, the most relevant change is that the game now takes place outdoors a lot - it's no longer all about dungeon crawling. You actually get to see the sunlight! More game information and screenshots can be found at Bethesda's Morrowind site.

Be sure also the check out the two expansions to Morrowind, Tribunal and Bloodmoon.

The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard
line

redguard screenshot Aside from the Elder Scrolls RPGs, there were also two non-RPG titles. This is the first of them. I cannot say much more than that as I've never played it myself. It is probably as hard to come by as Daggerfall, too. More information can be found at Bethesda's Redguard Website, including the official Redguard Comic!

An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire
line

battlespire screenshot The second non-RPG title. I didn't play this one either, so I can't really say anthing about it. Check Mobygames

The Elder Scrolls Travels Titles
line
Recently, a number of games have been released for cellular/mobile phones. The titles are Shadowkey, Stormhold and Dawnstar. From the screenshots, it looks like the graphics are akin to those of Daggerfall. Check them out here
